In her book, Deborah says that he had an affair with the church secretary (or made a pass at her, I don't remember which), and that was the reason he was fired. That's when he got so mad at the church system and started studying socialism, etc.
A few years ago, I had a chance to talk to someone who was a local leader with Teen Challenge in Huntington Beach; who knew the Bergs personally and was actually present the night DB declared war on the system, etc. His perspective on things was very interesting, to say the least.
