It is sometimes difficult not to break out in guffaws of unladylike laughter in situations where such mirth might be misinterpreted as mockery, or even worse, outright disrespect.

We have found that when such difficult social situtions arise, it is best to keep a straight face and "soldier on," so to speak. We would never wish to make our guests here at exfamily uncomfortable by suggesting -- in even the most off-hand manner -- that a gracious social overture might be seen by some as having been made in bad taste.

But alas, gentle reader, you seem to have let the cat out of the bag. Miss Manners feels it is her obligation as an arbiter of civility to repair the damage done and "soldier on," so to speak.
