That is really the point! If they had had ANY kind of conscience or Christian brain cells still working, they should have excommunicated him on the spot for such horrific crimes! Even if they'd wanted to selfishly protect their organization, they should've excommed the guy then say "Go after the bastard".
Instead, like you say, they chose to protect him to protect themselves. And I have a feeling that decision came straight from the demon-endorsing mouth of Karen Zerby! She literally deserves to rot in hell for what she's done!
