When a person who has eaten plain white rice and salty noodles with bits and pieces of critters in it for years with no exposure to sugar, chocolate, candy etc, gets away from that environment and is exposed to all these unknown foods, it is perfectly normal to dive in with a gusto and possibly make yourself sick. Same goes for being rigidly supervised and controlled and then getting out from under that. Add to that the emotional and physical and sexual abuse most SGs experienced in the family either as a direct victim or witness of it or both, and I would say that going to many excesses would be expected. Some level out without help, others may need more help to get on their feet and some, unfortunately, don't get help in time.
I think repression, abuse, cut off from families, not allowed normal connections to others, are all a few of the factors of how the family does damage. What is GOOD to see is that so many are getting on their feet and helping each other and getting help, getting educations, and are STRONG partly in spite of the family and partly because of SURVIVING it.
