Announcement – Two Possible New Boards

Posted by Coordinator on August 09, 2004 at 06:41:40

This is probably a good time to announce the possible creation of two new boards. For several months we have discussed the pros and cons of creating a board dedicated to discussing politics —and the subject came up again for serious discussion the past couple weeks. Several posters seemed to want that kind of forum. However, our experience with political arguments seemed to weigh against it. As WC outlined:

1) It was causing more trouble for us and everyone
2) It was outside the general mandate of this site
3) People were tearing each other down
4) Friendships were lost
5) Other important and sensitive posts were being shoved out of the way

While politics was a part of our life in the Family and is a significant part of the lives of several posters since the Family, we did not want heated political posts to once again shut down all other discussions on the GenX board. Each board has its specific focus and parameters, and we like to keep them distinct from each other. We therefore discussed creating a separate political board. Should we go ahead with this, it will probably be with the understanding that it will exist as long as posters exercise self-control and respect for each other. The board would be dismantled if tempers flared and posters hardened into “enemy” camps who do nothing but tear each other down.

Another board we have seriously discussed for months is one dedicated to Bible-believing Christians, where they can safely discuss Christian issues, ask for prayer and find empowerment. If we go ahead with this new board, then the present board, Journeys, would become a forum where those on a different journey can safely discuss alternate spirituality. Until now it has seemed like those posting on spiritual topics have managed to co-exist, discuss different worldviews and possibly even learn from each other. However, if posters hesitate discussing their faith among other ex-members for fear of being criticized as either fundamentalists or heretics, then perhaps two separate safe boards would facilitate discussions.

WC or the other coordinators can correct me if I’ve misrepresented anything here, but this is it so far as I understand it.
