Here are two sides of the same coin:

I was in a WS home for some time. The leadership we were under controlled several WS homes. We would receive a weekly allowance for us and our two children. Our working hours were about 8 hours with some time for a "siesta" type of break on 5-day weeks. Fairly humanly comparable to a nice job.

My next assignment took me to the pits with a different leader. I worked six-and-a-half days of about 9-10 hours per day and no allowance money. Complete bondage in a horrible exploitive job.

Since I saw the difference, AND I knew the main difference was the leadership, I didn't ask directly but eventually found out there was no other difference. The budget was assigned by number of people and tasks (tasks were pretty much the same here as they were in the other). Curiously, the production in both settings was almost the same. In other words, production was less important (though it was the excuse for more working hours) than the actual working hours.

To be fair, there was a lot more sexual playing in the second one than in the first one but there was more real togetherness in the first one.
