Who are we exers?

Posted by Kinda Gentler on August 30, 2004 at 21:56:40

I found this link and this particular section comes from frequently asked questions. I think it is pertinent. Shaming and blaming ourselves and each other imo does not help anyone. Taking personal responsibility for acts committed in the family under the influence is a good thing to do, but usually for a person to do that appropriately they have to have help for themselves and room to sort out their own trauma.
We of the first generation have plenty of our own trauma and most of us were not in World Services homes. Those that were had to get to a point where the cult self cut ties with all the fear factor that existed within to get out of the cult. That happened either by being dumped, getting burned out and leaping out or dying. We have all, EVERY GENERATION paid a price for being in a cult. Here is a link regarding cult members. One thing that many people frequently and erroneously think is that FG were "stupid" to have "joined" a cult and that we were catergorically depraved people before during and apathetic afterwards. IMO, nothing could be further from the truth. The following site:
http://www.trancenet.org/groups/faq/faqcm.shtml
has some very basic information on this subject.
Most exers that post at any exer boards want to recover from the damage experienced within the family. Most want to help each other and help themselves. I believe we all deserve getting help. The FGS were recruited as (largely) youth who were either very vulnerable and/or idealistic and the Family presented itself as it does to the public, as the solution and as wholesome. The sex cult came to be in a systematic way that was NOT there from the start as far as people that joined with a FEW rare exceptions like MARIA knew.
The things suffered by SG's that grew up in the family and spent their pre-teen and teen yrs in camps and with extreme abuses certainly have every right to their anger. It is no wonder they view FG as they do.
BUT it would be fallacious to say that the categorical view of FG as being depraved people who joined a sex cult or even a cult is harmful all the way around.
I wish, somehow, there was a way for us to be able to get history straight regarding the family and to quit judging ourselves and others so harshly. The true perps- and by this i don't mean that those that engaged in behaviors under duress were not perps as far as having done something.. but the ones with real perp characteristics could care less about anything other than being caught. Maria and Peter have certainly shown these characteristics. Probably many have that have gotten so close to the top and stayed there for years. But that is still a minority of FG. Obviously it seems James Penn is actively interested in doing something to make amends for his role of PR person for the top and years of activity at the top. He has a conscience I would guess. But what James Penn saw and experienced was NOT what the majority of FG did. The way I see it, our damages are many.
First we gave our lives to something that seemed to be good and loving in a safe way without knowing the poison that was under the candy coating until the drug was taking effect already.
I urge any that care to, to check out the link and read the info on cults.
And btw, this is the first I have responded to any of the recent posts on the subject. ALSO this post is primarily intended for FG or SG in a general sense that want to look into the subject. Even the therapist and writer of the Ultra-Authority book recognizes that both generations have their suffering and that it would be helpful for both to imagine what it would be like to be in each others shoes.
I am glad I got out when I did because it would be all the more painful to be dealing with accusations of supporting a group I never would have joined to begin with had I known what it really was about, and have to deal with even more years of separation and damage to my own family within the family. Berg/Zerb sought to destroy family connections by busting up couples, their kids and pitting us all against each other. The whole damn ball of wax is a tragedy.
