Lying to the public is one thing. Everyone was trained to do that. The rationale for lying to the public is that they're in the grip of the anti-christ system and they can't possibly understand or accept the full revealed truth that we, The Family, have gotten hold of through our great end-time prophets. This is faulty reasoning, btw, but I'll let it stand without further comment.

What about the people further up the chain of command who lie to the front-line people? People at the top know the facts about the child abuse of the 1970s and 1980s. There's a book listed on the Family's webiste (Chancellor: Life in the Family) that documents the testimonies of several long-time members talking about the abuse occurring, as historical fact. Chancellor's book doesn't present the abuse as a few isolated incidents by rogue missionaries, but ties it directly to Berg's teachings and leadership.

YET, we find all sorts of people in the lower echelons who deny child abuse ever happened on a wide scale. Why is that? I can only assume there are WS people at the top who continue to promote a reconstruction of history that whitewashes the facts so the ordinary members keep in line. Like Karen Zerby & Chris Smith are incognito because they're hiding from the anti-christ. There have got to be WS folks who know Zerby & Smith travel under false identities because they're hiding from law enforcement authorities.

Just as there are WS people at the top who know how money gets spent on wacky stuff like $90K motorhomes. Or payouts to people who know too much and decide to leave. Isn't it in their interests to keep folks on the front line believing their tithes are all going to the production of literature, tapes, posters, etc.?
