Can someone answer this question for me?

First the Zerby's buy an entire retirement center in 1976 with money they saved somehow on a pastor's salary. There's no proof (yet) they received a big gift from Karen Zerby, but is there any way to check?

But my big question is, suddenly in the 1990's they change their retirement center into a "non-profit" place. How on earth can they afford to do that and why would they do that? Why would they deliberately stop earning money when (if they bought it with their own savings) they would have to have financed themselves over their heads to do it?

Why become a charitable non-profit retirment center? Something about that really sounds funny? Can Joseph or any one with business sense explain how something that odd could actually be legit?
