Maria never once entertains the thought that human beings were hurt and lives destroyed by something she preached and practiced.
She admits adult/child sex "hasn't born good fruit," which is like saying "most kids didn't benefit from it." Most kids don't benefit from eating junk food, but it doesn't necessarily harm them.
There is absolutely no recognition that even a handful of children were damaged by her teachings about sexual love, much less that the number may be in the hundreds or thousands.
There's not even a glimmer of recognition that a child in her care was traumatized by beatings--just that Merry got the story all wrong and no one will believe God's prophet and his appointed leaders would do such a thing.
It's all about her and hanging onto the kingdom she built on the backs of others.
