"I often offer joints to students who come into my office to talk philosophy. I think it definitely enhances the discussion," wrote UCLA professor Michael Gehman to drug czar Bob Martinez. "Just last week I delivered a lecture on the mind/body problem while tripping on some righteous acid. I was fried, Bob."

Gehman's letter followed the firing of Stanford prof sTUART rEGES for writing a similar letter to the drug czar's office last year (see High Times, Sept. 1991 issue). Gehman agreed to a search of his office to defuse the controversey (he was clean), but refused to back down from his stand against censorship. "Right this minute, in the bottom drawer of the filing cabinet in my office, I've got a half-pind of Humboldt sinsemilla, several hits of acid and a brown sack of shrooms I harvested myself from a cow pasture the last time I visited my home in the gReAt steak of Mississipi," gehman continued. "Hell, Bob, that's nothing!"

"This is not a drug issue. This is a freedom of religion issue," Oregon Gov. Barbara Roberts told reporters upon signing a new law allowing sacramental use of peyote by Native Americans. Attending the ceremony were Alfred SMith and Galen Black, who were fired from their jonbs as drug counselors for using peyote in a Native American Church ceremony.
