Yeah, exceptions were always made for top leaders. They always pulled out the scriptures that showed that even the prophet Samuel's sons turned out to be rotters, so, hey, every kid has free choice and (sniff) can reject "all our good teaching".
But for the rank and file peons the old rule held: your child doesn't want to brush her teeth, God is exposing the sin in YOUR heart.
