blaming the victim

Posted by Perry on May 10, 2005 at 15:26:16

Check out this paragraph from a book I'm reading. Sound familiar?

"During the witch hunts that followed the publication of the Malleus Maleficarum, thousands of children throughout Europe were burned at the stake as witches for having copulated with the devil. In France, a 6-year-old was considered old enough to give consent to intercourse. In what must be the most heinous example of blaming the victim, children were often molested by adult males and subsequently burned at the stake as witches; it was commonly held that since men could not be witches, they must have been victims of diabolical sexual seduction by the female children. Although we no longer burn these children at the stake, we still often blame them for their own victimization."
