People who have been knocked around, freaked out, raped, beat into submission, psychologically kicked in the cahones, run over like road kill by demonic 18-wheel tractor-trailers (just name your source of violence and repression)...such people will cope with the shock to their nervous system by going to la-la land. I think Maria understands the need to escape to a fantasyland of personal power--flying around and zapping your oppressors--at a very intuitive level, and she uses it to keep the faithful in a drugged state of submission.
