There was not only an emotional threat but a physical threat too because the cult member learned to fear physical death of self or others, not just death in the afterlife, for leaving or "backsliding". Since a person leaving or thinking of leaving had this sort of threat, it was not possible to hide out, get witness protection or whatever to protect oneself, because the potential death could come from anything, anyone, anywhere.
