In the COG's early days readings from Richard Wurmbrand and Victor Frankel were common. These books centered around being tortured and surviving but not being "bitter". Wurmbrand btw was imprisoned in Romania after the communists took control. (There's a big contradiction regarding thoughts about communism. Contradictions do keep people confused.)
These stories fit in good with Berg's endtime fear factor scenario still used by "Mama" to this day. Fear of end time is a good tool for control.

I certainly was on a roller coaster ride for the dark side, eh? Thinking it was for the best..
