I do vaguely remember that Berg talked about his interest in Mormonism, but at the time I had suspended any rational thinking and with only a grade 11 education was not equipped to see through Berg's manipulations. Now, with my reasoning faculties restored and with a better understanding of comparative religious history, these passages convince me that he wasn't an accidental cult leader. He knew exactly what he was doing.

I also have a vague memory of Berg writing in negative terms about "cults of personality", possibly in connection with Mao. It's ironic that that's exactly what he ended up creating. Of course, he did not see it that way because he believed God's annointing was on him and therefore his personality wasn't an issue. However, anyone taking even just a superficial look at TF can easily see that without Berg the COG/TFI would not have existed.
