In the post you ask, "Is it true that he was never in the family?" and now you ask, "Is there evidence that they actually left?"
Seriously though, my best guess is that they were allowed to "float" far more than the average Family disciples. When everyone was under the Chain, they were allowed to float around inside the Family not subject to authority, and do as they pleased. When they "left" they still carried lifetimes of Berg-think with them, did Family type stuff, that if anyone else had tried pulling, they'd have been considered an out and out backslider. Yet Steven and Eve could "float" out the door and still be favorable, still be eligible for monthly hush (er, I mean "support") payments. I think though when Berg says they left that they left the Family structure itself, even though still friendly and pro-Family.
