Well, what is Stephen did just that and got away with it. He supposedly left at just about the same time. And he had the responsibility to take care of Eve and make sure she was happy enough so that she would not document...
And so Stephen is still in the family, only not in Maria's family but one closest to Berg's. It makes perfect sense to me.
