I think it's bizaare to call Maria "Mama". I often find the tone of her letters extremely patronizing, like she's talking down to a 10-year-old child.
The disparity between top leadership and the troops at the bottom accounts for a lot of the differences in stories that former members tell about the group. In general, those are closer to the top see and experience a lot more of the dirt. On the other hand, there are some folks at the bottom who got trashed pretty badly, too.
