Regarding the SSRI debate doesn't it all come down to the fact that each individual has some variations in their body chemistry and when a person is in ENOUGH pain that they go to a PSYCHIATRIST and get psychotropic medications, that doctor unless they are negligent will work closely with the patient to find the right dose and right medication?
I agree with both sides of the debate that for some it is life saving and for others it can be harmful. I think that was the point, watch out if you are using SSRI's. Maybe it would have helped more to suggest working with a good doctor and carefully monitoring with that doctor how the SSRI works for you and NOT going off of any medication without supervision by the DR treating you. That causes problems too.
If anything, it seems to me that most people who leave the cult would resist getting any help from psychiatrist or therapists because of the way Berg used the threat of throwing some people away and sending them to an institution because they were "full of the devil" and he was getting rid of them.
Hence psychiatric help would be seen as a real weakness and a huge personal deficit. I think resistance to getting help is far more harmful for people that need it than getting help is.
I don't think SSRI use affected actions taken by some who were enraged from past abuse. If anything getting help may have prevented loss of life. The most serious thing destroyed by the Family was TRUST. There was only one person to trust and that was Berg and now it is Maria. So much is done to pit people against each other to preserve loyalty to the top. It is the epitomy of 1984. You learn not only to betray others but also to betray yourself.
How could it be easy then to seek help from strangers you have learned are for throw aways?
I hope some day between boards and between generations that there will eventually be more understanding of what we all went through as a result of what happened to one generation who were youth and searching for ideals getting sucked into a cult before cult was a known word, and understanding for those whose experience is unique to them for having known nothing else but growing up in a cult.
Now that we are on the outside of it, whether born in it or leaving it after having joined, we all deal with damages and losses and all could use support.
Many left before there were "uncles" and "aunties" and those that didn't look back in horror at what they became within that culture.
One thing that seems to continue after the cult is a need to tear each other apart at times or for there to be inter-generational hatred from one side and shame on the other.
Pedophiles like Berg feel no shame and only regret getting caught. Berg stayed mobile and never got caught. But many ex FG never ever expected the twists that occurred in the Family would ever happen. What a process to give your life to what appears to be a good cause not realizing because of IMMATURITY and lack of life experience what you were getting into.
We all need support and we all need as much of it as we can get or give to each other imo.
