What I would really know, is the identity of the computer that connected with NDN and delivered your message.

It might be your computer, it might be a proxy server.

I would probably know who you buy your internet service from.

When I'm having a problem with someone at NDN, the last thing I want to see is that the user is connecting to NDN via AOL. That puts them in a pool with millions of people, and usually means dialup, so the next call gets a completely new IP address.

When I run my own IP tonight into a visual IP tracing program, it says that I use Comcast (true), and I'm in San Francisco (false).

I've seen people go crazy trying to match people with IP addresses. Do you remember back when one of the boards was posting the IP's on purpose and Jay almost blew a gasket over it?

If someone has sort of a unique ISP, and a cable modem or DSL it's easier to figure out who they are. But, so many ex-members use services like AOL, or large cable providers like Comcast, it's really not an exact science.

As far as using that info to gain access to an actual computer, that's really over my head. I don't even want to know how to do that.

I can tell you in all honesty that NDN does not run any kind of scripts that attempt to read information from computers other than the IP address. We do resolve the numbers into a name that might look like:

c-66-456-169-43.fsd9.wa.comcast.net

That could tell me that the person might be in Washington State, but that's still a guess.
