Yes, it's up to Tim to choose. It's also up to Tim to live with the consquences of his choices. It would appear that Tim has chosen to live with a certain amount of bad publicity, guilt by association, and lack of credibility, and you are as powerless to change the consequence of his choices as you are to change the actual choices. Perhaps it's the consequences of the choices Tim has made rather than the ill-will of people who frequent this board that accounts for your defensiveness of your father?
