I think the fact that so many well-known actors and musicians are Scientologists (Cruise, Travolta, Beck, Hayes, Lisa Marie Presley, Kelly Preston, Chick Corea, Kirsti Alley, to name just a few) gives Scientology a sort of "cool" factor with some people. I can see how certain gullible, naive people would think that if it works for famous people maybe it'll work for them too.
I think you are right in comparing Scientology's "stars" to kings and queens in TF, except that those "stars" have far more influence over many more people. Also, in TF Ks and Qs were/are more likely to be merely supporters of their work and are not really the public face of TF in the way that Cruise is, for example. Cruise and his ilk certainly bring new converts to that cult in a way that no K or Q ever did in TF.
