The Slant of Optical Illusions and Defying Gravity

First, Peter wants pity, by pleading special project poverty. "We want to do this, we want to do that" While they actually live in comfort and never tell the truth about actual finances-he must reinforce the mission and sacrificial aspect of the Family's christianity.

My question:

Why doesn't he and Zerby just empty his home finance box for the dear projects he's whinning about and hit the road on a faith trip, like most of us were forced to do many times.

Diverting Minds:

Attention must always be occupied with striving for something---it's the Family way, and the charismatic leadership method of keeping their hands on the reins of power.

They come up with the ideas--hence they have the power.

If somebody else dares come up with a really good idea--guess what---Peter always says, 'Hey, we don't have the money." Hence he tries to keep control through creating need, whinning, begging, pleading, or acting like the wise old fart who's seen it all before. When your audience is stupified by dogmatic dreams you don't need to be a hypnotist to stun them.

Whatever he does, by the time you figure it out he's gone--with your money, your pride, your mind--which you gave to him during the magic show--under the cover of darkness and cultic ideology.
