The story of the high school group leaving reminded me of my days teaching Christian doctrine in a rural Catholic high school. I had a teacher's aide who was a farmer's wife, mother of eight children, and a devout Catholic Christian. She made daytime talk shows such as Donohue (in those days) and Oprah required TV watching for her adolescent children who were about to leave the farm and the strict Catholic Christian culture of Norman Rockwell's America for college in the big city. "They have to know this stuff is out there," she'd say. "Who's job is it to teach them, if not Mom?" Rita was always open to using videotaped material from the talk shows for discussions on Christian morality and social issues in our religion classes. God bless her, she was one wise woman.
