I would have to say that connections is the way to get into the book world. We were being interveiwed for the Egomania documentary and we talked to them about our proposal we had written up to write a book. One of the directors had a friend who was an agent and she would in a word for us. We sent newspaper clippings and our proposal to her who passed it on to the right department in her agency and they accepted it.
As far as the writing of it, it's a long and complicated story we will tell some day, but HarperCollins themeselves were interested in making the story personal and it was very important to have an arc of the story, a definite beginning, middle and end of the story, focusing on on thread throughout and sticking to it. What I did find interesting was that with these type of stories there has to have a positive resolution at the end. Our writer/editor had said that other stories had been dropped because there was no tangible resolution - leaving the reader despondant. This is all important. Also, the reader needed to relate/and or understand us. The word count was the main thing they wanted us to cut down on, but we managed to agree together on what to cut and what to keep and are happy with the end result.
