You said it much better than I did.

What the child did isn't geography yet--that comes later. She could have been putting names to the faces of all the presidents of the world, but it doesn't mean she knows politics or what their function really is.

Thorwald, if you found the geography aspect of TF a positive experience, more power to you! But you approve of rote learning as well?

Pushing a child to develop unnaturally can lead to negative results in later life, so they won't develop skills for themselves. I have my own experience of teaching my own children to do amazing feats before the age of six, nothing of which has carried over to their lives today. It was all a good show, but it didn't count for anything in the long run.

My eldest son (who was never really traumatized by anything while in TF and who left as a child) was pushed to go busking. He had the biggest most gorgeous voice ever. Everyone who saw him oohed and aaahed in amazement at the big voice coming out of the skinny little child. Today, he won't sing at all or have anything to do with music, at least in front of me. One day he thought I was out and I caught him singing to a CD, with the most amazing soulful gospel wailing ever. He could have done something out of his incredible talent, but he will never touch performing again. His watched his mediocre friends form groups--he was offered a spot but declined--and stood on the sidelines and watched them find success.
