We don't like to play cat and mouse

We already have features like this and much more. On the surface our board software and page presentation might resemble canned freeware, but our scripts -- all of the software on this site -- are 100% customized, written from scratch. And even the look and feel of our boards is going to change as soon as I get some time, hopefully later in the year. Canned freeware is generally full of security holes, and abusive people who know their way around such widely available software are always trying to find ways to hack into them, which is why we don't use them. I am happy with the system we have now, where we allow trusted posters to use our boards freely, while saving them the registration process. It's the best of both worlds IMO: registered-user forums vs. open public forums. I'd rather have posters we trust and let them post freely. If they abuse that trust and deliberately break the rules that's another thing. But installing feature after feature on open boards to offset attacks, although necessary, is only playing to the cat-and-mouse games of abusive users, and still requires work and maintenance. If you don't have good and trusted board users, you would still have to clean up the boards of the 100 flaming posts made in 2 hours by some incensed poster with too much time on their hands.
