If I remember correctly, isn't that what the book Not For A Million Dollars is about? Berg was found guilty and ordered to pay a million dollars, but fled instead. And then there was the New York investigation into his wrong-doing. It seems to me that this is evidence that he deliberately lied to his followers to mislead them as to the real reasons he had to leave the U.S.
