No, from all I can tell they have nothing to do with the Family. They're pretty much main stream Christians. Of course, they espouse the same fundamental doctrine, share the same Bible and the typically American interpretation of what they consider to be Christianity.
Spanking children, which is what you highlighted, is a controversial subject and it needs to be approached tenderly, I believe. I've had six children and did spank them when they were little, to preserve my sanity and to teach them were limits and borderlines were.
To label all spanking as abuse I find just a wee bit naive and uninformed. It's like saying that drinking a beer equals alcoholism. We can't just forbid alcohol because some abuse it. Or driving cars because some have accidents.
From what I can tell from his website, this fellow raised some pretty OK kids. At least it looks like this on the surface. One never really knows. I may not subscribe to his philosophy or angle on religion, especially some of his doctrine smacks like TFI, but I wouldn't want to judge him prematurely either.
