How much of this do we want to allow on our boards?

Posted by Coordinator on March 04, 2009 at 12:27:39

From time to time we get posts coming in by "new" users who are pro-TF, or claiming to be TF members. The intent seems less about actual dialog and discussion than slipping in the TF side of the story, to dispute and minimize claims made by "bitter apostates" on our site.

I suspect these posts are made by a small number of returnee nuisances, previously banned or exposed, attempting to mask their identity by going lengths just to appear to be posting from different IPs. But more relevantly, it is doubtful that these posts will lead anywhere. Take "Ready Freddy" for example: he asks a provocative question, gets some replies, but proceeds to ignore the points brought up to him.

It would seem one of the intended purposes of these pro-TF nuisances is to waste our time--to buy some free pro-TF air time on our boards, slipping in as many broadcasts of pro-TF statements as possible, by using our site. I believe this is important for them because we come up very high in many google searches related to TF, and they are getting a lot of bad publicity.

Sometimes these pro-TF posts can generate a lot of good responses--we've gleaned invaluable material for use on our site. I have no doubts we can rip through their less-than-ingenius posts without trouble. But, while I personally am all for provocative discussion and secure enough to welcome statements contrary to my personal beliefs, the way the trend goes with these "newcomers" and their inability to follow up, I'm skeptical we'll get that many good-value discussions through them.

One of the things we want to prioritize is a safe space for ex-members. Pro-TF posts would constitute an invasion of our safe space, even enrage or retraumatize people who've suffered enough. Unfortunately this puts us closer to the intolerant side. One of the things NDN was known for, was allowing pro-TF people to post there. There have been reports of several TFers changing their minds slowly, the more they interacted, and eventually leaving TF.

So back to my question:

How much pro-TF interaction do we want to allow?
