I figured it was bad because it made uncomfortable and I walked away. It bothered me even though it was the type of thing the letters had been mentioning it for quite some time yet it was shocking to witness it.
I didn't do anything to stop it because of the decision I had made accepting the validity of the letters and of the correctness of what leaders were saying.
Also, I didn't want to be tagged as weak.
It is likely that other reasons were at play but these are the most clear and overwhelming. From then on I tried to avoid situations like those that would make me uncomfortable.
In the end, it was the abundance of these situations that made me ask myself whether I was in the right place, and the rest is history.
