I've been aware of this guy since the 70's. I used to get things put on my car about the Alamo cult. I think I was aware of him before I ever heard of Berg because of the tracts always getting put on my car here in L.A.

This is also the guy who kept the dead body of his wife around for years. If I remember correctly, he had a prophecy that she would be cured of cancer, then she died anyway, so he kept the body around saying god would raise her from the dead. She stayed dead. I'm not sure how he explained that away.

Then he got into trouble for basically using slave labor in his church store. Every few years, he would get nailed for one kind of wrongdoing or the next.

The last thing I heard about him before this was that he was in jail for tax evasion. I'm not sure when he got out and found time to get in trouble with the underage girls.

He does resemble Berg now. I remember back then he used to dress up like a cowboy and get photgraphed like that a lot. He and his wife looked kind of like Roy Rogers and Dale Evans for a time. At one point he looked like fat Elvis.

The big difference is that this guy stayed in the United States, where Berg and current leadership tend to be outside and in secret locations. This guy just stayed like a sitting duck and they finally put him away for what amounts to a life sentence.

All I can say is it's about time.

One time a friend of mine called their info line and I sat and listened to him argue with whatever follower answered the phone. I remember her saying to my friend that she could tell that he "was not wise". This was probably around 1983 or so.

I remember getting tracts on my car about how he hated the Pope. Hated America... etc. He is quite a character. All bad.
