Rumors about the earth flipping may be related to what we know about changes in the magnetic poles. Scientists say the earth's north/south magnetic poles are constantly changing. A slow drift in the precise location of the magnetic poles is constantly occurring, but about every 300,000 years the magnetic poles completely reverse or flip sides. The last magnetic flip happened 750,000 years ago. Are we due for another flip? No one knows, but all the geologic activity going on suggests the possibility. If that is the case, a complete flip of the magnetic poles takes several thousand years to accomplish, according to this NASA article.
