I can relate with what you say, it makes a lot of sense to me. I remember all those stories from TSC and living the forceful indoctrination. Many of us must have had a super low self esteem or something like that.
To me the pulling into the dark side of TF was like the lifesaver you mentioned but a slow pull into evil. All we had to accept was a slow pull in that direction and we were willing to accept just "a little wrong" that took us "just a little further" from the light.
I think the idea of being slave by choice can be seen in the reluctance we felt when thinking about leaving TF and at the same time being able to see how wrong things were.
