I've been keeping up with "Celebrity Rehab" and found it very interesting that a cast member/client grew up in China as part of The People's Liberation Army. Leadership there used her as a sexual object and also used her journaling to break her down. We are probably all familiar with that grievous breach of trust, not realizing at the time that it was. Because self revelation, or honesty often led to dire consequences, being broken down or dealt with harshly.
To me, orthodoxy or unorthodoxy don't matter. There are some things that are criminal and deviant regardless of what the party line or religion is or isn't. Whether Warren Jeffs and his twelve year old bride (and other minor brides) or the Chinese Red party leadership that sexually abused an attractive young (minor) girl. Even if not minors, to be pressured into unwanted sex whether using God as a potential destroyer, or a knife point, or allegiance to a political system, the acts are destructive and soul killing/wounding. If someone wants to read tarot cards or meditate at a Hindu or a Buddhist temple or an Islamic mosque, I don't care. I don't see them as deviant or bad even though my cup of tea may be very different. I don't see people viewing those things as being deviant- as being bad people for holding those beliefs. But when people break trust (as in TF with journaling and telling on self in that 1984-ish way)rape or abuse people in the name of their orthodox or unorthodox religion or political party- I take exception. To me, "Live and Let Live" does not mean allowing a serial killer to kill my family if I can stop it. It doesn't mean that I'd ever accept serial killing, child molestation or rape. But it does mean that I don't see it as my business to try and convince someone whose chosen beliefs or lifestyle are different from mine, that their path is the way of sin. I don't even like to use "orthodox" and "unorthodox" labels because then it can and will be argued what the definition is and, really, if David Berg wanted to grow a beard and dress up like Rasputin, did that make him evil? No. It made him weird, a tad psychotic maybe, but not evil. Was he evil because he believed in wearing socks with sandals, or he didn't like a lot of what the churches were doing? No. But it was wrong and illegal for him to go into churches and disrupt their services according to his personal beliefs- uninvited.
I think what made him evil was his urge to control everything and everyone around him and set himself up as "god" in that 'apocalypse now' sort of demented way where children, adults, were sacrificed to his lusts for power and control.
Neither "orthodox" or "unorthodox" are dirty words that indicate something bad. Either could be used negatively or positively.
