The kingdom of God does not mean eating or drinking this or that, it means righteousness and peace and joy brought by the Holy Spirit. If you serve Christ in this way you will please God and be respected by men. So let us adopt any custom that leads to peace and our mutual improvement. Romans 14:17-19

You remind me of my former supervisor at work. She was very intelligent and well-versed in all the rigors of social science research. When she was being pushed to do something she didn't want to do, she defended her position with a tactic I call "Slay 'em with minutiae."

It works like this: If you dump enough point-by-point detailed information on someone you wish to vanquish in an argument, they pretty much shut up and go away. What can I say to all your scripture citations and etymological analysis? Brother, I think you miss the forrest for the trees.

As to why I started with a quote from Romans: It made me think of you as I was meditating on the Word this morning. You are much more legalistic than I am and tend to respect the customs men devise to honor God more than I do. My beliefs about what other believers should do or not do are more liberal than yours, but when it comes to my own way of life, I suspect we aren't that much different.
