Polls can be very deceiving. You have to remember that ‘the public’ has been worked over for decades in order to arrive at such a ‘consensus’, and this is no secret.
If you read a book like ‘After the Ball’ by Marshall Kirk and Hunter Madsen, you will see how this has been manufactured via mass media. A few pages of the book can be read here:
