I don't know if this will make sense, but sometimes it is wise not to be too open and honest with employers or people in general. Many people who have not experienced a cult have this picture in their mind of what a "cultist" is, regardless of how many yrs someone has been out.
When I came back to my country of origin, I had to learn to lie. Because If I told the total truth, I would not have been able to feed my kids, and it would have negatively impacted many things. I realize that the average citizen embellishes their resume, and in fact, any resume place would teach you how to do just that, and how to bring forward your good references, strengths and qualities.
I think sometimes as exers we can be so hard on ourselves and hurt ourselves further when we just need to give ourselves a break.
Someone that has been a prostitute, for example, but never was arrested, would be setting themselves up for a life of dishonor if they wanted to straighten out their lives and then told prospective employers that they were a hooker for yrs.
By giving myself a break and having friends create a background for me that was not family, etc., I got a chance at a new life. I do not regret it at all. THEN I built the honest references and resume that I wanted to be, and as time went on, realized I was capable of.
btw, PD, hope the best for you and your family. and this post was more about some of the subject matter and not to you specifically.
I would bet that the culture where you are is perhaps less forgiving when it comes to a person's past. That has to make it even harder.
