I still consider myself a believer in Jesus Christ (basically, salvation) though I'm not very sure about much else. I don't read the Bible or go to church. I am also left-wing, always was, from a working-class English family of trade unionists and socialists.

I can't bear GWB or the type of religion he stands for. But there have always been Christian Socialists or Socialist Christians in England (especially before WWII). The two things have never been considered contradictory. It must be a cultural thing.

I enjoyed Soapbox but unfortunately it got out of hand when things turned personal. One thing I have realized over the years since I found the boards and came out of the fog I lived in for so many years (and they really did help change my life) was that I would never have been friends with most excogers if it hadn't been for the F. We just don't share enough of the same ideas, interests or experiences. It was the extreme beliefs (and the extreme suffering) that held us together more than anything else. There are quite a few guys I wished I had "popped" over the years!

But there are notable exceptions - and Acheick was one of them. I got to know her through the boards and have only the greatest respect for her - and her spiritual journey. She has much more faith than I do now, I think, and may even support GWB (aagghhhh!!!!). But from corresponding with her over the years I know the kind of heart she has - it's pure gold.

I find it very sad that after the cult experience we all had that people can't be more flexible, accommodating and broad-minded. I sympathize with the atheists and agnostics - it's a miracle that any of us excogers have faith in anyhting. I simply try to ignore the religious fanatics. But I wouldn't deny anyone the right to speak about or defend their beliefs.

I don't know the details of what has gone on behind the scenes but why isn't there room for everyone, regardless of race, creed or color?
