For me the similarities would only touch some of the bases. You're right that there are a lot of things that aren't the same.
Thinking about being manipulated, when I joined the group I was in a very vulnerable state, with really low self esteem. It wasn't hard for me to be manipulated. People who fall into alcohol and or drug addiction are people with a lack of self esteem.
When it comes to staying in a cult or becoming a bomber because you're afraid of disobeying God, there isn't much to compare. But I'm wondering if there isn't perhaps some correlation between the personality of the culty and the alcohol and/or drug dependent personality.
