I find Daniel's approach to this subject here on this board to be highly offensive. For example, he replied to one of my posts that I better go take my meds before I go postal. How offensive and unhelpful to a reasoned dialogue is that? He has made sweeping generalizations about SSRIs when many far more informed posters have pointed out that there is no "one size fits all" solution to medicating for PTSD. He also accused me of being closed minded, when it is in fact him that has closed his mind to the benefits that sufferers can gain from the right medication. He thinks by reading a few articles he can then declare what is best for the rest of us.

I too have been diagnosed with severe PTSD and have been in therapy now for a couple years. Like JS and others have described, I went for years without treatment because of the irrational fears implanted in my by the cult and people like Daniel. Even after I was diagnosed I resisted taking pharmaceuticals, and continued to suffer in agony as a result. After extensive talk therapy I reached the point where I was willing to try medication. I first tried Paxil, but stopped after just a few days as I didn't care for the effect it had on me. I then tried Mirtazapine (Remron) which I think is in a class of its own when it comes to anti-depressants, in fact I don't think it is an SSRI (can you professionals out there clarify how it is classified). I've been using it for about a year now and it has helped me tremendously. I had severe insomnia, but I'm now sleeping undisturbed for the first time in over a decade, my chronic physical pain levels have dropped, and I'm less likely to get triggered by external events (PTSD sufferes will know all about triggers).
