This is interesting because by the Family's own internal documents it shows that sexualization of members prior to sexualizing children was not the norm and was secretive for years, staying in the TOP. Then it was introduced gradually FROM THE TOP (including ZERBY). By the early eighties the sex was widespread, institutionalized and rampant and was published by top leaders as role models.
The sexualization of children was introduced from the top and whenever the books on "Davidito" were distributed they went to everyon in the family. Most everyone was pretty shocked by it and few were living this. I think that is WHY the family instituted camps and Victor programs. I wasn't around for that, but contrary to what Claire says in her interview [about isolated cases of members who abused children in the seventies because berg did not institute any safety clause,] DAVID BERG with KAREN ZERBY instituted child sexual abuse and child neglect as doctrine. Too many people ignored it and voila! Children are adults at 12 and were sent to camps and training centers where they were abused, conditioned, and controlled. Their parents could not be trusted to teach them the things BERG and ZERBY wanted them to learn so these centers were filled with the dedicated "teachers". Sarah mentions that their letters were screened and they had to re write them if too much info was in them. So they were screened for security purposes and parents did not know the full scoop of what was occurring there.
In the early days, in 1970 and through the seventies from what I remember, for youth who had been recruited to the family our mail was screened both incoming and outgoing mail. Sometimes the mail was not given to us but was kept and distributed to leaders or thrown away and we were instructed what to write to the parents about what we received (that we didn't).
For instance, while in Spain my ex's parents sent us some good and money and goods and it was opened by leadership. They told us what to write about how good the food was and act like we got it. We didn't. I remember it felt crappy and feeling angry inside but also feeling selfish for thinking like that.
Institutionalization still goes on and the highly charged sexual atmosphere is terrible for youth growing up in the Family not to mention that education is NOT adequate when it consists of community service and traveling.
Claire lies through her teeth about where the abuses of the past came from and about the Family trying to safeguard children. I hope some news venue has the guts to ask the questions Sarah brought up and not let the answers be dodged by the family's PR machine.
It was a great interview. Sick of Claire though. That visual of the bobbling cross on a prior interview sticks in my mind. Not a pleasant thought.
