It is understandable that if you've spent a lot of time and effort building up an identity and reputation connected to a handle, you wouldn't someone else to come along and mess with it.
At the moment we don't use password control or registration, so it is up to indviduals to agree not to use already-used handles.
It is difficult to speculate on motive. Some of this may be accidental of course. But whatever the case, when there are similarities in handles or when individuals are emotionally vested in similar handles, we ask that the latecomers add a numeral, like Swede2 or OT2.
