The way I see it, yes there are a lot of people that sow garbage in the name of their religions and that includes Christianity. I do see a difference between religion and spirituality though. In spirituality, the way I see it, people connect with others in the world around them, being able to hold on to their view of what or who God or their higher power is, whether atheist, agnostic, christian, buddhist, islamic or any number of religions that exist- without excluding people from friendship or working together with others as a community. Basically that would be humanity at it's best whatever the flavor their religion or lack of religion brings to their life.
In religion, there are many exclusionary factors about what fits in a fellowship and when extreme, religions are toxic and are humanity at its worst, whether Al Qaida or Westborough Baptist Church.
