First of all: Why the rant against 12-Step programs? I don't see anyone referring to them anywhere in the thread. About that, you're entitled to your opinion, as are millions of recovered alcoholics and addicts the world over are entitled to their personal knowledge that the 12 Step program does work.
I agree with long time exer on what you said about being it being a choice coupled with childhood abuse, it's your opinion. I know that there are loads of links to websites that you could post to support your point of view, just as I posted one that references the American Psychological Association.
