I see how this could go round and round and I'd rather not. I just know that I spent time in the same screwed up HDO, cult- whatever you want to call it, as you did and I came out of it with a lot of confusion and years of forming my own opinions and discovering what my own taste in life was. No doubt whatever culture a person grows up in, it has an effect on them. Some of those linger throughout life and not all things are bad in any culture.
For instance, having travelled a lot while in TF, I learned a lot about other cultures and enjoyed immersing myself into some different customs. I liked gaining a world perspective in spite of the limited confines of what is 'right' or 'wrong' while within the Family.
One thing I didn't keep was religion. I don't feel a vacuum where that was in my life. I'm fine being exactly where I am at with my views on life and I like that they are fluid without the prior need to block off what is not understood from information gathered in the culture I grew up in or adopted for years, as being sinful or bad.
