I don't think so. I think it is much more complicated than just a matter of choice. Who would choose to throw their life away? And that is what so many did, but without realizing that they were wandering into a spider's web (as Berg so aptly described the poison of systems like TF)as fodder for a dream turned nightmare.
With addictions, people realize they are taking poison into their systems but beleive they will be exceptions to the rule. They can "handle it" and won't go where most people do when addiction is first seemingly so wonderful and then brings people into great bondage and for some, death.
TF started as something that seemed innocuous enough- supported by many more fanatical religious people but spiraling over time into something extremely deviant and destructive. The apple was rotten at the core, but who knew? I'd compare it more to domestic abuse where the charismatic, charming abuser shows only the romantic, loving, caring side and then the break down/ tear down begins. The abused believes there is something flawed about them if they fix then they won't get the bad treatment they deserve. And/or, maybe they believe they can turn their abuser around but at some point it is about terror and survival. A far cry from what they thought they were opting into.
I wouldn't doubt that many survivors of TF got into sick relationships and were part of a sick relationship, sick sick sick, in one way or another. At some point, some people get help and learn how to make choices that are not destructive. I wish it were so simple as just to take a black and white choice, all facts laid out and dynamics understood before getting stuck and sucked in a "spider web" of "choice".
